CHELD appointed to the National Technical Working Group on the National Health Act, 2014

One of the highlights for universal health coverage in Nigeria and for using the instrumentality of law to promote better health outcomes was the passage and the Presidential Assent to the National Health Act, in late 2014.  There is much hope that this Act will fulfil its promises to ensure that every Nigeria receives a minimum health package (See Section 3), and that effective, qualitative, affordable, and accessible health care will become every Nigerian’s tangible entitlement.  At CHELD, we have begun the process of educating every Nigeria with access to the internet about the provisions of this Act.

To ensure that this Act does not become another stale law, with dead words on paper, the Minister of Health on March 17, 2015 inaugurated a Committee to develop modalities for operationalizing and implementing this Act.  We are pleased to announce that CHELD has been appointed as a member of this high-level committee which includes the foremost health agencies, aid organisations, and experts in Nigeria.

CHELD hopes to bring our expertise in health law and policy, our passion for excellence, and our desire to see better health outcomes using the instrumentality of law to bear on our work in this high-level committee.

CHELD will be represented by the Executive Director, Dr Cheluchi Onyemelukwe-Onuobia.  A health law expert, she has experience of working on such committees, being already a member of several other National Technical Working Groups, including at the National Health Insurance Scheme.
