Mental Health and Disability Programme

The Mental Health Programme aims to increase awareness of mental health and support for disability rights in Nigeria and other African countries, support persons living with and affected by mental health conditions and advocate for their rights, and improve access to mental health services through mental health law and policy reform

Members of the team have supported law reform activities to replace the Lunacy Act.  CHELD advocates for the visibility, awareness and support for persons living with mental illness and disability in Nigeria.

Activities here include dissemination of information on the Convention on the Rights of Persons Living with Disability, analysis of the application of the Convention in African countries, advocacy for law reform based on the CRPD, decriminalization of attempted suicide in Nigeria, support for suicide prevention through policy, law, awareness creation, referral and material assistance
